Instant Friends – Is it Possible?
08/23/2016 Published by: Amy Soupene
Am I the only one that dreads walking into a room full of people I don’t know? There are those brave souls that see this as an opportunity to meet new people and possibly make new friends. But for those of us more on the introverted side, all those new faces can look like a sea of loneliness.
Imagine if you will, that you are a student and you are viewing not just a room but a school full of new faces. Add to that prospect that this may not be the first or second occurence, but the third, fourth, fifth, or sixth time. Once again you will smile and search out new friends. These friends will become trusted sources of information as you learn to navigate your new environment.
Welcome to the world of a military student. Their life is defined by change and resiliency. “Hello. Goodbye. Repeat.” It’s our Back to School theme this year and it perfectly describes the military lifestyle.
Long ago the MCEC recognized that every time students moved, they faced challenges in acclimating, finding friends, and successfully integrating. With this in mind, the Student 2 Student program was created and implemented in many schools across the nation and overseas.
The S2S program is comprised of students in order to welcome all new students, military and civilian. This is a set of ready-made friends that are there to show you around, sit with you at lunch, and give you the inside scoop on your new school.
Having a group of friends to count on can mean the difference between a positive or a negative transition. A positive transition can propel a student to academic and personal success. This is truly a win-win situation with friendships being made by all involved.
The Student 2 Student program is just one way the Military Child Education Coalition has sought to support military students. With your support we can continue to offer many other programs, resources, and trainings.

Amy
