The 2012 “Call for the Arts” Contest

What is it?

What does it mean to be a military child? . . . In 2002, the Military Child Education Coalition (MCEC)®  established the “Call for the Arts” contest as a way to find out from those that know best . . . military children!

Consider this . . . “Art is the desire of a man to express himself, to record the reactions of his personality to the world he lives in.” – Amy Lowell (1874-1925), and “The aim of art is to represent not the outward appearance of things, but their inward significance.” – Aristotle (384 B.C. – 322 B.C.)

If art is the most fundamental way that we can express ourselves, then what better way for military-connected kids to communicate the trials and triumphs, joys and fears of transitioning with and missing the service member they love?

Based on each year’s submissions, MCEC® utilizes every opportunity to display the artistic skill of these children as a way of communicating all the issues, feelings, and truths that they encounter in their experience.  Artwork can be found in MCEC's “On the Move” magazine, their annual calendar, their annual conference/training seminar and other MCEC publications as well as on the home page of the SchoolQuest.org™ website.

MCEC Partners with the National PTA

You may have already heard of the Military Child Education Coalition’s® Student to Student program for high school students, or their “younger sibling” program at the middle school/junior high level called the Junior Student to Student program.  These programs exist in several schools where a significant number of military-connected students attend, and they provide a way for new students to quickly get connected at their new school.  (Visit the MCEC® website for more information on Student to Student and Junior Student to Student.)

What about those students who live beyond the reach of these fantastic programs?  . . . Students who live on Main Street America but are still affected by the deployment of Mom or Dad?  (Such as military-connected students whose service member isn't stationed at a large military installation or who are more remotely located due to service in the Guard or Reserves.)  How can programs created with this special student population in mind reach them?  Through a partnership with an organization whose reach is broad and deep in our education system . . . the National PTA!
