You may have heard or read about the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) recently in the news. Below is the official viewpoint of the Military Child Education Coalition (MCEC)®, our parent organization:
The Military Child Education Coalition (MCEC)® Viewpoint on Common Core State Standards
"The Military Child Education Coalition strongly supports the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). Every year many children move and change schools. For these youth and, especially for the over 1.2 million military-connected school-age students, the CCSS provide greater clarity and predictability, regardless of zip code.
These standards, collaboratively developed by the states, are a K-12 framework. Individual states ultimately retain control of teaching and learning expectations as well as measurement systems. From schools districts to the classroom teachers, the development of curriculum, instructional processes and strategies, assessments and the selection of materials are local decisions.
The Military Child Education Coalition advocates for these rigorous standards because they make sense. The structure of the standards is vital for all students to be college and career ready, but it is especially critical for the highly mobile military-connected student. The standards provide parents, students, and educators with 21st century Math and English Language Arts guideposts to ensure our children’s future success and enhance our nation’s ability to compete in the global marketplace."
