States have different entry requirements for PreKindergarten, Kindergarten, and Grade 1 students. These differences may result in transition difficulties for students who qualify for a program in one state and then move to a state in which the student does not qualify. If your child falls into this age group, this is an area that you need to investigate prior to the move to prevent any surprises.
Where can you find state registration age requirements for K and PreK?
Visit with your School Liaison Officer, search the school district website, or call the school central office for the most current registration information. Much of this information can also be found online:
- Consult the MCEC's Getting Your Ducklings in a Row publication for Kindergarten and Grade 1 requirement
- Education Commission of the State Kindergarten Database
- SchoolQuest's State Education Resources: Early Chlidhood Education. Look for your state and follow the link to find the requirements.
Are vaccination/immunization requirements the same in every state?
These rules can also vary from state to state. See the Immunization file in the SchoolQuest Library.
Note: Getting Your Ducklings in a Row also includes vaccination/immunization requirements.
What do I need to bring to register my child?
Most likely you will need to bring the following:
- Birth certificate
- Social security card
- Proof of residence (this is used to verify school zone for attendance)
- Vaccination record
