Has your middle or high school student ever received an invitation to participate in a summer program or conference in a particular area of interest such as art, medical careers, or writing?  Invitations like these are often the result of information students provide when completing standardized tests.  Participating in higher learning programs and showing a motivation to improve can set them apart from their peers and make a difference in getting into the college of their choice.  Even if your student hasn’t been contacted directly, now is the time when program enrollment often starts, so it is a good idea to begin your search if you hope to participate in something this summer.

Reasons to participate:
  • Stand out on your college application.
  • Get an inside view of a profession you are interested in.
  • Some even offer college credit upon completion so don’t forget to ask!
Thoughts to consider:
  • Fees are often involved but if you plan ahead and investigate, fundraising and scholarship opportunities may be available to help make program participation more reasonable.
Where to start your search:
  • Look at college, university and museum web sites in your area to see if they offer any summer classes.
  • Check with the guidance counselors of your student’s school.
  • Search the internet!
Popular conference/program subjects:
  • Art
  • “STEM” Subjects – Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics
  • Writing
  • Medical Careers
  • Leadership Development
Sample programs:

Good luck in your search . . . here comes summer!!!
