Interested In Being An Official Santa Tracker?

Santa Claus is comin’ to town and you can follow his flight!  The NORAD Santa Tracker is the trusted resource for kids all over the world who want to know Santa’s ETA.  And this year, NORAD celebrates 60 years of holding the title of “Official Santa Tracker.”

What started out as a typo has now become a tradition.  60 years ago in a Sears and Roebuck ad, Santa’s phone number was printed so children could call him.  However, the advertisement got the number wrong and instead of sharing Santa’s number, it was the direct line for the Commander-in-Chief, COL Harry Shoup, of CONAD (Continental Air Defense Command).

When the calls started coming in, kind-hearted COL Shoup played along, having his staff check for radar updates on Santa’s progress.  And with that “mistake” in 1955 a beloved tradition was created.

Today, CONAD has been renamed NORAD, but the Santa Trackers still exist.  NORAD staff, family members, and friends volunteer their time every year to answer phone calls and emails from curious children.

At the official NORAD Tracks Santa® website, children can listen to Christmas music, play games, and virtually visit the North Pole.  The Library is filled with books about Christmas trivia, my favorite is titled “Regarding Santa’s Sleigh”.  Did you know that Santa’s sleigh weighs 75,000 gd (gumdrops)?  Or that Santa weighs 260 lbs at take-off and 1,260 lbs at landing.  Too much milk and cookies, eh Santa?

The website has a countdown clock to Christmas Eve.  On December 24th the fun begins as the NORAD radars search to capture Santa’s take-off and journey around the world.  You can follow along at the NORAD Tracks Santa website , send an email regarding his location to or follow along on twitter @NoradSanta.

Merry Christmas to our friends, near and far. Thank you for your support and sacrifice. May the New Year bring you many blessings.

Best Wishes,
