Chances are you attended public schools growing up and that your children attend them now, but how well do you really know the public education system?  Think you understand it well?  Test your knowledge with this How Schools Work Quiz and you might be surprised!

For the majority of us who only have a general understanding of the public education system, the National Association of State Boards of Education (NASBE) has created a new resource to spell it all out clearly.  (The NASBE “exists to serve and strengthen the State Boards of Education in their pursuit of high levels of academic achievement for all students.”)  In this new resource, “How Schools Work and How to Work With Schools”, the NASBE explains the United States education system and how communities, businesses and health workers can work more effectively with schools.   Inside, readers will find details on:

  • How our public education system works and governs itself at the federal, state, local and school levels, and how national organizations influence education policy
  • Ways to engage with the education sector including school-community partnership examples
  • Principles for working and collaborating with schools
  • FAQ’s about public education
  • Data sources and resources for additional information
  • A glossary of terms, acronyms and programs
