FREE Computer Coding!

Are you aware that it is Computer Science Education Week? CSEdWeek is an annual program to encourage K-12 students to learn computer science. It commemorates the birthday of Admiral Grace Murray Hopper on December 9th. Admiral Hopper was a pioneer in computer science.
No doubt about it, computer science is integral to our students’ bright educational future, and coding has become a basic building block. Coding allows us to speak the language in which our computers speak, and if we want to tell our devices what to do we’d better learn their language!
Students all over the country can take advantage of a free hour of coding. From kindergarten through high school students can and should be exposed to this important area of education. Both the Khan Academy and Code.org offer a free hour of coding.
Many moons ago when I was in middle and high school I can remember taking a few computer classes, one was even a very basic coding class. But, the ever-popular typing class was still reigning supreme. Today, typing has been replaced by keyboarding.
It amazes me that our children can play computer games before they can read. I have always loved fun computer games which also taught educational skills; reading, math, and science.
Computer coding can be taught in the same fun manner that encourages students to keep testing the limits of the knowledge and skills. STEM education is a popular topic today because it is so important for our future. Computer Science is an important element to STEM education.
Interested in learning something new? Lead by example and take a free hour of coding for yourself along with your kiddos. When our children see us as always learning and curious, we offer them a future without limits.
